The Department of Biological Science at National Sun Yat-sen University was established in 1987 with the goal of integrating both fundamental and applied life sciences in its teaching and research efforts, aimed at nurturing talents in biological science research and education. The MS program was established in 1992 and the Ph.D. program in 1997, with the in-service master's Program initiated in 1999.
The department currently has 18 full-time faculty members, 12 adjunct faculty members (jointly appointment), one distinguished professor / contract employed research fellow, and 2 chair professors: one emeritus professor and one honorary chair professor. The specialties of the faculty are within two research divisions, including Ecology and Evolution and Molecular and Cell Biology.
Each year, the department admits approximately 50 undergraduate students, 17 MS students, and 3 Ph.D. students. The university also offers interdisciplinary courses for students to earn certificates in biotechnology or double major. The department actively encourages undergraduate research, with over half of junior undergraduates joining faculty labs and participating in research projects each year. Additionally, the department provides the Shen-Non Prize and scholarships to motivate students to pursue excellence in academic research.
